Guides

Subject Index to the 1990 Census of Population and Housing

(eds. Michael R. Lavin, Jane Weintrop and Cynthia Cornelius)
DocsRef HA 201 1990 .L38 1997
This is the only detailed, single-source guide to tables found I the major publications of the 1990 Census (CD-ROM and print materials). Its primary purpose is to help users locate specific data tables. The index directs users to report titles (and geographic levels for each report). Users must then refer to the "Table Finding Guide" within the actual report to determine the actual table number.

Understanding the Census: A Guide for Marketers, Planners, Grant Writers and Other Data Users

(ed. Michael R. Lavin)
DocsRef HA 201 1990ar (Copy also in Reference Department)
This guide covers basics such as what the census is, what data are collected, hard to answer definitions such as "the homeless," CD-ROM and the Internet sources, census geography, and advanced techniques such as EXTRACT. The format is very user-friendly, with questions and answers, tips and new items highlighted throughout.

Using the US Census for Research: Guides to Major Social Science Databases

Doc HA 201 1990ad
This guide focuses on the more current data products (PUMS, Tiger Files, ICPSR availability) from the 1980 and 1990 Censuses for the more advanced student or researcher. It includes a brief history of the Census, excellent for description of the differences between the 1980 and 1990 Censuses, and describes how census data can be used in research projects (no index).

1990 Census of Population and Housing: Tabulation and Publication Program.

DocsRef C 3.22318: 980/D
This census includes a section on a comparison of the 1980 and 1990 census data products.

Indexes

Bureau of the Census Catalog of Publications: 1790-1972

http://www.census.gov/prod/www/titles.html
DocsRef C3.163/3:790-972
This is a complete index and bibliography of Census reports from the first census through 1972. It not only covers the major series (decennial, quinquennial) but also more sporadic and even esoteric materials. The first part is the Dubester work for 1790-1945; the second part continues the listing from 1946-1972. No Superintendent of Documents call numbers are included. Much of this will require Interlibrary Loan or a visit to an older, more complete depository library.

Dubester's US Census Bibliography with SuDocs Class Number and Indexes

DocsRef HA214.Z877 1996
This bibliography repeats the first part of the Catalog of Publications (mentioned above) but includes additional reports and a very important Superintendent of Documents call number listing. It covers Census publications from 1790-1945 included in the original Dubester volume, which is divided into two parts: Decennial Census Publications and Publications Other Than Decennial. Additional titles are added, as well as an index of corresponding SuDoc numbers, a Title Index, a Series Index, and a list of state Cutter numbers. This is an essential verification tool for our current holdings, since SuDoc call numbers listed only what was produced. Many of these materials will require Interlibrary Loan or a visit to an older, more complete depository library.

Bibliography and Reel Index: Guide to the Microfilm Edition of United State Census Publications: 1790-1970

Doc Z 7554 .U5 R 47 1975 c.3
This bibliography offers a reel by reel listing of the microfilmed Census. It can be used to obtain a specific reel location for various Census volumes. Also, this appears to be annotated with [ ] which probably is an indication of UNH microfilm holdings.

Reference Strategies and Hints

The earlier decennial censuses covered all subjects (economic, business, etc.) rather than just population and housing. The microfilm set contains many items that one might not associate with a decennial census publication so one should not overlook the possibility that it might include a given report.

Through the years, paper census reports were discarded without full replacement in microfilm. Therefore, there will be gaps in our holdings.

The Bureau of the Census Catalog gives LC call numbers in its entries. These may prove to be useful clues as to where to direct patrons to browse for items that may have been cataloged but are not in III.

We have the NH Schedules from 1790-1920 in Micromedia. These are copies of the actual surveys that were filled out by Census takers. Historians and genealogists use these since they include lots of personal data. We do not have the Soundex (name listing by the sound of the name) for NH. The 1930 Schedules will not be released until 2002 due to the 72 year privacy law.
